Sverre Simonsen

Hei!

I'm Sverre, and one of the co-founders of ROEST. Our goal, from the beginning, has been to make coffee roasting as easy as possible, without compromising the quality.

Our new webportal is now up and running with lots of new features, but we still need your help to continue improving.

Here you can share ideas, report bugs, ask for new features  and we will try to answer you as soon as possible.

All the best,

Sverre.                                                                                                                                                                                              27.12.2022

I've now fixed this issue, so you can adjust end Bean Temp with 0.1 resolution for both Celsius and Fahrenheit.

I've also fixed a bug discovered by @rogerg_zapata which would make the roaster not follow the profiles FAN (and RPM) values under some conditions.

If anyone would like beta access to this firmware version, please tell me the name of your roaster here, and I will upgrade your roasters.

Hi Sverre, before I commit to joining the beta, I have 3 questions: do you have an expected release date for the next update? Also does this maen I'd be on the beta for all upcoming releases? and if there's an issue with a beta, can I revert back to the last stable release?

Thanks

Hi,
You'll just receive this new firmware which is just a bug-fix release. You are not enrolling into any continuous beta program.

I'll be rolling it out to all roasters in a week.

If you experience any problems with this firmware, just tell me and I'll roll back.

Hello,

A thought in the BBP. Would it be nice if one could trigger the BBP. Currently the BBP triggers only if a roast is done fully, but if a roast is interrupted the BBP does not kick. Perhaps something to consider?

Hello @Jon_ROEST @Sverre Simonsen

I noticed the turning point marked only the temperature at which the event takes place. Usually, the TP will also display the time when it happens.

If you decide to add the time, awesome.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

Profile Comparisons

At the moment, we can get great graphical comparisons of finished roasts and we can get a table comparison of roast profile history.  We don't have:
*Graphical comparison of roast profile history.
*Ability to compare one roast profile with another.
*Ability to continue to see starting roast profile when editing it, or any roast profile as a reference when editing any other roast profile.
*Ability to compare roast profile with roast log.

Basically, the machine and the portal log and collect tonnes of information, but it is hard to get the benefit of it when editing profiles, which is exactly where the information would be the most useful.  So, for example, let's say that I have a profile for a washed coffee that needs tonnes of heat to roast.  And then I move to roasting an anaerobic coffee that starts off super slow and rockets away towards the end.  Maybe I want to work out the point at which the BT for the anaerobic on the first roast of that coffee started to take off, and then I want to work backwards and start an inlet temp reduction 30s before that starts.  I can sort of only do this in a clunky way by tabbing between the editor window and the roast log.  Then I will have in my mind what I want the inlet temp change to look like, but if I have to edit multiple points, I can't actually see in the editor a graphical representation of how the profile I started with has changed eg. the starting profile as a dotted line.

Obviously there are a number of issues with all of this, such as if you are comparing different types of profiles eg. air temp vs power, but that's sort of the profile I'm after.

This is now implemented along with lots of other small things. 👍

Hi Jon,

That sounds great. Please add me to the beta.

Also - think that when the BPP is finished (triggered) that it should activate whatever preheat temp you have set in the loaded profile (or the general one if there isn't one set). Unless I'm missing the reason why it doesn't do that.

Thanks

Hello,

I started using the Inventory feature, and I discovered it does not automatically calculate how much coffee is left from the initial amount. As a example: I added 400gr sample and roasted 100gr. The app does not shows the remaining amount, which should be 300gr. Maybe something worth to look at?

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

Great work, keep chipping away at this.  The back end is great, and keeps getting better.  Before moving to ROEST, I think I mentioned to Trond that I had a Quest M3 that a friend of mine and I hacked with a heat gun and a PID and controlled via artisan and all of that.  It made great coffee, but we kept breaking probes and it was just cumbersome to use.  So having the roest sample roaster "just work" and having a good back end is a very attractive selling point of the machine, to me.

Anyway, I've been poking around and having a look at the inventory:

Could we have something like a Crop Year or a harvest or arrival date or whatever.  What I'm thinking here is you are going to have people using the sample roaster to evaluate a crop one year, then they're going to get the next year's harvest.  They're going to need to be able to compare.  For example, Tim is going to have an entry for Honduras Nacimiento Bourbon every year.  I'm not quite sure how you would manage something like countries that have multiple harvests, like the mitaca harvest in colombia.  But I think you're going to need some sort of solution for this.  And I guess for example the arrival or reg date might not do it, because you might, for example, get a coffee from a supplier then buy more of the same lot from them, which arrives later.  Anyway, hopefully I've explained the issue and you can brainstorm some solutions.

Bean size - the international standard seems to be the 64th of an inch screen size thing.  So I gather something like screen size 16 is 16/64 in.  So the size should probably have screen size measurements from maybe 14 (probably too tiny) to 19.  Kenya uses AA and AB as sizes.  Colombia I think uses Supremo and Excelso as sizes.  Peaberries are commonly referred to as PB and they have a different, longer hole size screen for physical screening.  If you could add these options it would probably be useful.

For bean process, there are a tonne.  I guess you could add:

Honey - Yellow
Honey - Red
Honey - Purple
Honey - Black
Anaerobic Washed
Anaerobic Honey
Anaerobic Natural
Koji Washed
Koji Natural
Thermal Shock

I mean people have their own proprietary names, and the above misses the point and oversimplifies a lot, but it's something of a start.

Maybe you could have a separate field for decaf:

Decaf - Water
Decaf - Ethyl Acetate

This is because you can decaf things that are other processes.

The "Quality" field should really be a score out of 100, because people will want to put cupping scores there.  Could you maybe have a check box or something to auto-populate it from the average score of all cuppings?

I'm also kind of not really sure what you guys thought people would put in "Bean Name", given there are so many other metadata fields eg for producer, data, variety.  What is the purpose of the "Bean Name" section?  Is it just what we want to see in the roasting screen when we go to assign a bean?

Could you do something cool like have the bean names only display in the roasting screen as an assignable bean if the inventory is >0?  That way once we record that we've used something up, it won't clog up that screen.  Like next year when we've finished this year's crop.

Also, w/r/t the cupping forms, to be blunt, I think you absolutely have to have 0.25 increments.  It's a sample roaster.  Like I mean I cupped like ... I don't know ... 40 kenyan coffee samples this year to help some people work out what to buy, and you can expect that there were only small differences between things.  It'd be good to speak to some people about how they use the forms, but, for me, I tend to use the COE form and if you give everything 6, then that works out to 84.  So starting with 6 as a default value is probably a good idea.  Then there might be a nice way that you could use the keyboard to shortcut data entry.  Like if you had ASDF correspond to 6.00, 6.25, 6.50, 6.75 and 7.00, that would be most of the scores people would use on the COE form the most often, I think.  You could have tab move to the next field and then you could really fill out the score sheet pretty quickly with one hand.

Cheers,
Luca

Hei, Luca.

Thank you for your inputs, we will brainstorm around it. Inventory has not been our main focus as most of our customers are using a different solution for this, but the idea is to build a system around P3000 when that's ready

But the general idea is that we want to simplify things 🙂

Hello @Sverre Simonsen

I hope all is doing great.

Would it be possible to add a pre-heating timer? I've noticed the roaster takes around 15-20 minutes to reach the temperature where the drum is stable. This will just add to the already great BBP feature the roaster has. For any given charge temperature, a roaster may follow his/her own prefer variable, I follow for example drum temp. As an example, if I charge at 180c, my drum temp is around 138.4c, where is when the drum temp does not change in temp much, to me is the most stable, and I would like the roaster to let me know when that temp has been reach after I've turn it on.

Let me know if that's possible, personally I hope, you guys consider it 😉

Cheers.

Hello @Jon_ROEST

I hope you are well.

Would it be possible to implement an option where one could easily have the mouse pointer over a profile without having all of the info covering the curve one is analyzing? Can a button be add it to turn on/off the info display when analyzing a roast profile? Please, see the picture attached. I was trying to study the impact my changes had on a section in the profile I've created and I couldn't do it properly since all the info was covering the section I was trying to analyze. Something like the "Enable grouped tooltip" but it could be "enable/disable roast info display" or something like that.

Info_on_curve.png

Maybe this option already exist and I do not know how to turn it on, if so, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi guys,

Since not everyone buys green coffee for retail operations, such as home roasters or labs, maybe it would be a good idea to add a drop-down list in the inventory section for the weights. Some people will have less than 1kg to roast and for them, like myself at times, would be ideal to know the exact amount of coffee left in grams. Currently, the weight is display in Kg, and 0.4kg is not the same as 365 grams left. Maybe is not a big deal, and I understand if you decide to not bother adding such option; however, it would be nice.

Thanks.

Hello

Suggestion for cupping section

First of all, the cupping section is great. Thanks for adding it. When adding descriptors, I've noticed one can't add new ones. For instance, the banana flavour is not in the list of descriptors, another one is plums. Would id be possible for a cupper to add his/her own descriptors? maybe it can be added by separating them with a (,) coma?

I don't know how often this can happen, but I made a mistake while filling in the cupping form in the web portal, I realized this after the cupping session was complete. I was not able to edit the cupping session. Would an edit button be something worth to look at?

Thank you for your time.

Cheers.

Hello Jon, I hope all is great.

Suggestion for Inventory

Would it be ideal to don't have to fill manually the sections. A drop list could be added that allows the roaster to choose from a pre-made list of his/her own creation.
  • Cultivar
  • Farm
  • Region
  • Country
  • Exporter/Importer
  • Producer

For the Bean Process section, an option to add a particular process would be nice, And if the system can store it, that would be even better! So one could select from that list at a later stage if the same process happens to arrive to the lab/roastery.

In the Reg Date section, it would be nice if once clicked, the calendar displays right away instead of having to click the calendar icon.

Let me know what you think.

Thank buddy.

To the list above

It would be ideal to have a "add one more" or something along the lines button, that allows the roaster to add a new bean to the inventory without having to go back to main menu to start the adding inventory process. This button could be located next to the "Update Inventory" button.
